Starry Road - New Studio Part II

Some of you may remember my first post a while back, about the new studio my husband and I are building: Starry Road - A New Studio in the Works.

Here's a brief update...

After many months of waiting we finally closed on the purchase of the land and were able to get started. Mostly what we have at the moment is a big pile of dirt and gravel, all nicely arranged of course. Our local earth mover guy Dan Long is doing the work. The photo above is what it looked this past Thursday.

Then on Friday, Dan and his helper started building up the foundation and digging the footer (this will support a floating slab):

The driveway was also put in (don't laugh, this is all very exciting to us) :

Meanwhile, over the past several weeks, we revised the plan many times. Here's what we ended up with:

Tomorrow we will finalize the order for windows, doors and cabinets. We ended up adding more windows than originally planned. We also expanded the kitchen and bedroom area upstairs with the thought in mind we would use this building as both a guest lodging and as a retreat for us during hard winter periods when the cabin may be inaccessible. At the same time, however, we are trying to keep costs down, so this is a challenging juggle.

We also expanded the garage part of the building so that we would have room for the washer / dryer, furnace, kilns, workbench and other items, including the new tractor hubby got. The tractor will be needed for maintaining the grounds, clearing brush, moving firewood, clearing snow, etc. Here i am trying it out.

When I went to the site yesterday, I took a few pictures of the old sheep barn which is very near the location of the new studio, now just a tumble of rocky ruins. Casey had fun running around while I explored.

That's about it so far. I'll post again as the actual building starts to go up. Stay tuned!
